‘Planned programmes under Year of AI completed’

Hyderabad: Even though the Covid-19 pandemic did put a temporary brakes on the Telangana government’s plans regarding 2020 the Year of Artificial Intelligence, it did not stop the government from carrying out planned activities. Detailing the major projects carried out by the government with regard to AI in the State, Telangana IT and Industries department principal secretary Jayesh Ranjan said that the government will be releasing a detailed report on Year of AI.
“Although Covid-19 did act as a deterrent, but we have been able to achieve all the programmes planned for 2020 Year of AI. We started new programmes and solutions related to agriculture, smart cities, and surveillance, enrolled about 30,000 students for the skilling programme under TASK, identified partnerships with companies like Intel, Hexagon, and Applied AI centre in IIIT-Hyderabad, engaged with prospective startups throughout the year and also set up a governance structure called T-AIM (Telangana AI Mission) to run AI-related programmes in different institutions like the Centre of Excellence in AI set up with Nasscom,” Ranjan said.
He was speaking at the opening of HexArt Institute, an AI Community Centre in Hyderabad set up by technology provider company Hexagon Capability Centre India (HCCI) on Monday. The centre will cover more than 350 students every year across multiple batches and has been established at a cost of Rs 64 lakh. HCCI will invest further Rs 30 lakh year-on-year to manage the AI community centre. The fundamental and advanced level courses are designed for students from Class 8 to Class 12 and senior engineering graduate respectively. The 2,000 sq ft facility is at Mehdipatnam.
Navaneet Mishra, V-P and General Manager, HCCI, said that courses are currently being offered virtually but will be offered at the centre once government regulations on opening up of institutes are in place. “The goal of AI community centre is to empower and upskill the next generation of youth with AI skills. This centre is part of the MoU that HCCI signed with the Government of Telangana,” he said.
