Hyderabad: A series of preventive arrests of students swept the Osmania University campus ahead of BRS working president KT Rama Rao appearance before the SIT for questioning in connection with the phone-tapping case here on Friday.

The police personnel entered into the university hostels on the intervening night of January 22 and 23 and detained BRSV activists and students, including BRSV general secretary Jangaiah and Mithun.

BRSV State vice president Dr. Tunga Balu was also detained by the police on Friday morning. The preventive arrests drew sharp criticism from the BRSV that stated that it was carried out illegally and as a pre-emptive move.

Dr. Balu said the SIT inquiry was being misused by the Congress government to settle political scores. “Just because we exposed the Congress party’s corruption scandals and spoke about the shares and commissions distribution, the government is resorting to political vendetta in the same of SIT,” he said.

Listing several alleged scams, including land, power, Krishna and Godavari rivers diversion, Nallamala Sagar project, and the coal scam in the Congress government, Dr. Balu questioned whether exposing such issues lead to summons for investigations.

Accusing the State government of indulging in diversionary politics over the past two years, Dr. Balu said the SIT notices were issued immediately after the BRS exposed the Congress party’s organised looting. Instead of responding to questions raised by the opposition, the government resorted to arrests and inquiries, he alleged.
