Hyderabad: In just one week, the Rachakonda Traffic Police booked over 40,000 cases and imposed a fine of over Rs 1.4 crore on traffic violators. The same period saw 54 accidents, in which 10 persons lost their lives. Officials said human errors including negligent driving, overspeed and drunk driving were the causes.

As per traffic police data, during various special drives conducted across the city for violations and as part of regular enforcement, 40,620 Motor Vehicle Act cases were booked under various heads and a fine of Rs.1,43,03,720, was imposed between November 6 to 12.

To curb the menace of drunk driving, the traffic wing booked 49 cases during the period. The violators were counseled by the Traffic Training Institute staff in the presence of their family members. A total of 176 persons were produced before court, which imposed a fine of Rs 4.3 lakh on them. Apart from this, a total of 274 vehicles that were seized during drunk driving checks were returned to their owners following High Court directions.

As for the 54 accidents in which ten were killed and 50 injured, officials said most of the accidents occurred due to human error and road engineering defects.

“Some of the notable human errors include negligent driving, over speeding, drunk driving and self-skidding of vehicles,” a senior official from the Rachakonda Traffic Police said.

The Traffic Engineering Cell staff along with inter-department officials visited nine recent fatal mishap spots and studied the cause of accidents.

“Short term, midterm and long term correctional measures were addressed. The Traffic Engineering Cell staff are continuously coordinating and monitoring the suggestions to rectify the black spots to prevent road crashes in future,” the official said.

Apart from this, the police had put efforts in closing a direct approach to the highway at Choutuppal crossroads to prevent accidents apart from sticking reflectors at Saroornagar, pruning of tree branches and laying of rumble strips.
