Hyderabad: You thought men didn’t need help? Behind all the macho, bicep-flexing men and even the dad bods of the world, there are many who want to be heard, at least once in a while. And it is for those men that the Save Indian Family (SIF) organization has been set up.
With a number of awareness programmes lined up for International Men’s Day on November 19, the men behind SIF say their aim is to promote positive role models of men and to stop defamation of men.
Men will be men? No, says SIF, sharing that their ideology is to remind people of the positive values that men bring to the world. And, no, they are not against feminists. The idea is equality.
“One might ask what problems men are facing for us to fight for their rights. Let me tell you, several innocent men are being blamed because of the absence of anyone to hear them out. Thus, we want to bring awareness and create a separate wing for men’s welfare in the government,” says M Seshagiri Rao, SIF coordinator in the Telugu States and also the founder president of Men’s Welfare Ministries (www.menswelfareministries.org), another body trying to voice men’s rights.
SIF Hyderabad recently installed a stall at the Sunday Funday programme at Tank Bund to announce their presence.
“Most taxpayers are men, but governments do nothing for welfare of men. For a gender equal society, we hope to bring a fair platform for men where their woes are heard,” Rao says, adding that they are also aiming at equal representation of men and women in Indian politics.
SIF also wants equal hearing for both genders in cases of domestic violence, harassment, especially at workplace, and also marriage insurance. The insurance should provide monetary help to both men and women if they decide to live separately or in case of demise of a partner, says Rao, adding that SIF also runs a helpline (8882498498) for men and holds counseling sessions at respective states and cities.
In Hyderabad, the sessions are every Sunday at Indira Park.
