Hyderabad: Owners of several properties along the two elevated corridors of the Secunderabad Cantonment have defaulted on their property tax payments, according to SCB tax wing authorities.
The SCB tax wing served the current financial year’s demand notices to the affected property owners and asked them to pay the annual property tax by March 31 to avoid penalties and seizure of properties.
Several properties, about 1,500 residential and commercial units, were affected as part of road widening for the two elevated corridors, Paradise Circle to Dairy Farm Road (Suchitra Junction) on National Highway-44 and Gymkhana Grounds to Shamirpet ORR on State Highway-1 (Rajiv Rahadari), based on the demarcation.
A SCB senior tax wing official told Telangana Today, “A significant number of property holders whose buildings and establishments will be affected by the elevated corridor construction have chosen to skip their tax payments, claiming their properties are affected severely. The tax assessment has been done, based on the existing structures.”
The official said the trend of tax evasion among these property owners led to a considerable accumulation of outstanding dues, and the reasons behind non-payment were believed to be linked to the impact of the elevated corridor project on the properties.
The SCB administration reportedly examined measures to recover pending tax amounts from defaulting property owners. The two elevated corridors under the SCB project were key infrastructure developments aimed at easing traffic congestion in the Cantonment limits.
The SCB official said, “The tax assessment has been done for over 36,500 properties in the Cantonment area, and this year, a demand of Rs 38 crore worth of property tax has been raised. Till now, Rs 31 crore of property tax has been collected. Two days are remaining, and all the property, including those affected by the corridor project, is to clear their outstanding dues at the earliest to avoid punitive action.”
