Telugu actor Gopichand sports a suave Kabaddi coach look in his upcoming sports drama titled ‘Seetimaarr’. The movie discusses discrimination against women in sports, societal attitudes towards women, besides also touching upon various layers tangentially such as gender stereotypes prevailing in the society.
“The issue of discrimination against women is a crucial element that is highlighted in the movie. Kabaddi players have to wear short and skin-tight clothes. The reality is quite far and different from cinematic imagination. Aspirants have been facing a lot of discrimination from various quarters. As a resu, players with such skill, talent and potential who are destined to make it big on the international stage, are fighting the evil day in day out. Movies like ‘Chak De’ and ‘Dangal’ have a transformative effect on our perspective and behaviour pattern in encouraging women athletes in sports,” says Gopichand.
Like every other film that was delayed due to pandemic, ‘Seetimaarr’ too has its woes to pour out — inordinate delays with shooting schedule and release dates. “As things getting better, I prefer to watch movies on the big screen. But, the OTT platform has become an additional revenue model for some producers. Future of OTT is certainly looking up but theatres aren’t going anywhere. People still like to watch movies in theatres,” the actor who has plans to revive his father T Krishna’s film production banner.
“I am planning to give a go at it. Filmmaking is a profitable business if planned meticulously. With careful pre-planning on budget and various other ingredients, film production is remunerative business venture. But, I am not sure when I’ll do it. ‘Ee Tharam’ will be revived soon. Next, I will be doing a film ‘Pakka Commercial’ with director Maruthi and later a film with director Sriwass.”
Gopichand has four national Kabaddi players in his film. “Knowing their struggles coming from a rural backdrop is so heartening. Despite their achievements at national and international levels, there is no proper recognition from the system. The entire team had to work so hard for weeks to get the desired output. Nothing goes in vain, hard work pays off,” says the actor.
The actor sensed immense potential to tell the sports story on-screen. “I realised that the earlier movie ‘Gautham Nanda’ for which director Sampath Nanda and I had collaborated, had its flaws post-release. This time, we ensured that the product came out clean without any flaw. It’s a story about a sport that rural India admires so much. And I felt it would surely be owned by audiences,” he adds.
‘Seetimaarr’ boasts a good star cast of Tamannaah who plays female lead Jwala Reddy, the love interest of Gopichand. Digangana Suryavanshi play a TV journalist while senior actor Bhumika Chawla can be seen in the role of Gopichand’s sister.
