Nagarkurnool: Fighting against all odds, operations are continuing to rescue the eight persons trapped in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel at Domalpenta in the district on the seventh day.
A portion of the SLBC tunnel had collapsed on February 22 and eight workers were trapped inside the tunnel. Nearly 600 personnel from 12 different departments are involved in the rescue operations.
Already, Indian Army, Navy, rat miners and NDRF teams are undertaking extensive operations to rescue those trapped inside. At present, the workers are clearing the metal debris and sludge accumulated in the tunnel.
Clearing the heaps of debris, including steel and iron, has been challenging for the rescue workers. Workers have managed to reach the last 50 metres from the spot of collapse and are clearing the muck on Friday.
Irrigation Minister N Uttam Kumar Reddy on Thursday had said that the rescue operations would be completed in another couple of days.
It is learnt that a team of NGRI is also taking up the rescue works using the Ground Probing Radar (GPR) unit. GPR is a geophysical survey under which electromagnetic waves are transmitted to image the subsurface.
Similarly, a team from South Central Railway also joined the rescue operations and deployed two teams of metal cutting experts.
