Hyderabad: The works proposed under Strategic Nala Development Programme (SNDP) would be taken up shortly once the rains subside, Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister KT Rama Rao said here on Tuesday.
“We are taking up works at a cost of Rs.858 crore in the first phase covering the areas that were inundated during the massive floods in October 2020,” he said, replying to a question during question hour in the State Legislative Council.
“Unfortunately, we could not start work as tenders got delayed this year,” he said, underlining the importance of SNDP in view of the expansion of the city.
“We are in the final stage of finalising tenders. Once that is done and the monsoon recedes, we will start the work by this month end,” he said, stating that the entire length of the sewerage system in the city needs a thorough look.
Complimenting the MIM legislators for their initiative in helping clear 3,000 encroachments on the 10-km Murki nala, Rama Rao said the works undertaken on Murki nala from Chandrayangutta to Musi River was a classic example.
“You (MIM) did a splendid work. The same type of work is expected to be carried out in the entire city,” the Minister said, adding that the department believed in three R’s principle – removing encroachments, rehabilitating families and retaining nala width.
Referring to maintenance of nalas, Rama Rao said the department had started an annual maintenance system ensuring that it happens throughout the year. To another question pertaining to nala problem in Serilingampally, he said the State government has spent Rs.2,100 crore on supplying drinking water to colonies on the outskirts on saturation mode and solved the drinking water issue.
On the same lines, the State government was considering taking up underground drainage works on the outskirts and it was estimated that Rs.3700 crore would be required. “If there is a serious problem, the zonal commissioner concerned can take up works as powers have been given to them to take up work up to Rs.2 crore or the members can give it to me in writing to start the works,” he said.
