State of the art biorepository inaugurated at Hyderabad-based LVPEI
The biorepository has been established with the generous support from Prof Krothapalli Ravindranath, retired Dean, SV University, Tirupati.

Hyderabad: A state-of-the-art Ophthalmic Research Biorepository, to store collections of human tissue for future research on disease mechanisms, therapeutics and diagnostics, was thrown-open at L V Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) campus, a press release said.
The biorepository has been established with the generous support from Prof Krothapalli Ravindranath, retired Dean, SV University, Tirupati. The new facility is on par with international standards and is well equipped with infrastructure required for cryopreservation or storage of ophthalmic tissues in -80 degree Celsius, -20 degree Celsius and 4 degree Celsius freezers, liquid nitrogen for snap freezing and specially trained technical staff for handling the samples.
“We are grateful to Prof Krothapalli Ravindranath for his generous contribution and his keen interest in supporting ophthalmology research at LVPEI. The study of these preserved tissues will help in developing innovative and breakthrough therapies to treat blinding diseases, help in preservation and sanctity of invaluable patient samples and developing a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of both common and rare diseases,” Dr Sayan Basu, Network Director, Prof Brien Holden Eye Research Centre (BHERC), LVPEI, said.
The facility, which was inaugurated in the presence of Prof Krothapalli Ravindranath, Prof Geeta K Vemuganti, Dean, School of Medical Sciences, UoH and Dr Sudha S Murthy, Director, Clinical Support, Datar Cancer Genetics, is also expected to play a vital role in coming up with new insights for managing rare eye diseases.
