In a landmark verdict on January 8, the Supreme Court cancelled the Gujarat government's decision to grant remission to the 11 men who gang-raped Bilkis Bano and murdered seven members of her family.
Advocate Shobha Gupta, appearing for Bano, stressed that the three vital factors – the nature of crime, impact on the society at large and the precedent value – were not not taken into account while passing the remission orders.

Chief Minister Vijay Rupani took the decision about the relief package after reviewing the situation during a meeting on Tuesday evening, an official release said.
The state government has applied for a patent to change the nomenclature of dragon fruit, which is largely grown in Kutch, Navsari and different parts of Saurashtra, to 'Kamalam', Rupani told reporters on Tuesday.
“We have seen Gujarat's reply. Five people have died on the seventh floor. What kind of affidavit is this? No attempts should be made to suppress the facts,” said a bench headed by Justice Ashok Bhushan.
