Eight schoolchildren from Kamareddy were stranded in Medak for three days after floods cut off the Pocharam dam route. Sheltered in a village panchayat, they await reunion with their parents as rescue attempts failed amid heavy inflows.
The century-old Pocharam dam on the Medak–Kamareddy border withstood record inflows of 1.82 lakh cusecs, more than double its flood discharge capacity. Though the dam held firm, parts of the bridge were damaged as authorities shifted villagers to safety.
Medak district witnessed unprecedented rainfall with Sardhana village recording 328 mm in 24 hours. Overflowing streams and rising water levels in Pocharam dam forced officials to evacuate Sardhana residents to safety. Heavy rains also lashed Nagapur, Chegunta and Ramayampet.
Pocharam Dam, located at the confluence of the Aleru stream on the borders of Kamareddy and Medak districts, is experiencing overflow due to the continuous heavy rainfall over the past four days.
