Hyderabad: The State unit of Congress party is weighing all options before taking a call on contesting the Legislative Council elections under the local authorities’ constituencies, especially in the wake of the party’s disastrous performance in the Huzurabad by-poll. The TPCC Elections Management Committee held a meeting with party leaders at Gandhi Bhavan here on Saturday and discussed different aspects about contesting the elections.
TPCC Political Affairs Committee of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee had already directed the leaders of election-bound nine districts to furnish details of the party’s strength and the potential candidates in their respective local authorities’ constituencies by Tuesday evening. Based on their inputs, a decision was expected to be taken whether to contest the MLC polls. Accordingly, the party leaders held a meeting on Saturday.
Former Minister G Chinna Reddy said during the meeting, different aspects, including the impact of money in the elections, were discussed. In the past, the ruling party had indulged in poaching of leaders, who won the election on Congress ticket, he alleged. “We will take feedback of more leaders and present the same before the high command in New Delhi. Based on its directions, we will decide whether to contest MLC elections or not,” said Chinna Reddy.
Notification for biennial elections to the Telangana Legislative Council from nine Local Authorities’ constituencies, including Adilabad, Warangal, Nalgonda, Medak, Nizamabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy, was already announced.
One independent candidate had filed his nomination from the Karimnagar constituency. Party sources said leaders were evincing interests in contesting the elections from five constituencies, including Nalgonda, Khammam, Warangal, Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy.
