The MMR is one of the key indicators of maternal mortality and is defined as the number of maternal deaths during a given period for 1 lakh live births. At the time of statehood, the MMR in Telangana was close to 92 and by 2022 it has dropped to 56, the Sample Registration System (SRS) March, 2022 edition said. Kerala with an MMR of 30 and Maharashtra with an MMR of 38 were ranked top two in the report.
Among South Indian states, Telangana has emerged second after Kerala in having the best maternal mortality rates. Interestingly, Tamil Nadu which is traditionally a powerhouse in primary healthcare services has an MMR of 58 while Karnataka had an MMR of 83.
Health Minister, T Harish Rao on Twitter congratulated the State health department for the achievement. “From 92 to 56, our MMR defines our devotion towards our people. We are rank third in the India after Kerala and Maharashtra. This is the visionary leadership of Chief Minister, K Chandrashekhar Rao. Congratulations to all the health workers for this achievement.
