Hyderabad: The Covid-19 pandemic had ravaged almost all the sectors with education being one of the most impacted ones with schools and colleges forced into a temporary closure for more than 16 months.
While some private budget schools were on the verge of closure due to the effect of the pandemic, several new private and corporate schools have been mushrooming in the State as several private managements have drawn up their plans to open new schools in the next academic year.
After the schools reopened for physical classes for the academic year 2021-22 from September 1, the School Education Department has started getting applications for setting up new schools in the State.
So far, 121 applications were received from private managements for establishing new private schools in the academic year 2022-23. Most of the managements have sought permission to set up schools in Medchal-Malkagiri and Ranga Reddy districts. The applications were expected to shoot up by at least another 200 as the last date to apply concludes in the last week of December.
Even when the Covid-19 pandemic was at its peak the last year, several managements had evinced their interest in opening new schools. Accordingly, 363 applications were received by the department of which 250 were granted necessary permissions. This apart, around 100 private school managements have sought permission from the department for upgrading their schools.
According to the officials of the department, new schools mostly were being set up by corporate and private managements. “Most private managements are applying to set up new schools in Medchal-Malkajiri and Ranga Reddy districts. At the same time, each year several private managements are closing down their schools due to lack of enough admissions. However, they are not reporting to the department as they are hoping for admissions again in the fresh academic year,” officials said.
The State already has close to 11,000 private schools and 3,000 to 4,000 schools are located in Hyderabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri and Ranga Reddy districts. Of the total, the majority of the schools were private budget schools.
