Jogulamba Gadwal: With intermittent rains and canal releases raising hopes for a good Kharif season, farmers in the district have begun seed sowing activities. However, a shortage of urea is threatening to derail the progress.
Farmers are being forced to wait in long queues at Primary Agriculture Cooperative Society (PACS) centres in various parts of the district to procure urea. The delay in fertiliser availability is also delaying sowing operations, triggering concerns among cultivators.
This comes even as the State government maintains that there is adequate urea stock. The ground reality, however, paints a different picture. On Friday, scores of farmers, including women, were seen lining up outside the PACS office in the town, expressing frustration over the unavailability of fertiliser.
Heated arguments were witnessed between the farmers and PACS officials. Farmers demanded that authorities ensure proper supply and support them in taking up agricultural operations without further delay.
Many expressed concern that the delay in sowing may adversely affect yields this season, especially if rainfall patterns become erratic in the coming weeks.
