Hyderabad: In a profession that has traditionally lacked female representation, it’s still novel to see women cops around. And seeing them on-screen offers a different high to the audience. Boisterous ladies, packing a punch, and ensuring justice give the audience an adrenaline rush much like a ‘Singham’ or ‘Dabangg’ offers to massy crowds.
From Rani Mukerji’s memorable act in ‘Mardaani’ to Shefali Shah in the Emmy-winning ‘Delhi Crime’, here’s looking at the ladies who have slayed it in uniform.
Shefali Shah in ‘Delhi Crime’
Ritchie Mehta’s retelling of the Nirbhaya case could be sympathetic to the police force but it sells itself because of a sturdy performance by Shefali Shah. Her rendition remains an iconic one that went a long way in changing the face of the depiction of female cops on-screen. Sans theatrics, Shah keeps the character subtle and her performance understated which makes it more impactful.
Tabu in ‘Drishyam’
A woman torn between her professional duty and love for her son, Tabu was effortless in ‘Drishyam’. Savage and often cruel, her performance matched Ajay Devgn’s as the old friends shared screen space after quite a hiatus for the film.
Esha Gupta in ‘Nakaab’
The lady seems to bring out her best in the uniform. The actor who had earlier impressed one and all with her performance in ‘Chakravyuh’, Gupta is infallible in her MX player show ‘Nakaab’. Proving her mettle, Esha’s fight for justice in the series as a young police officer finding her own has emerged as one of the most commendable performances of the year.
Rani Mukerji in ‘Mardaani’
If Rohit Shetty dignified the police force by showing him as a superhero, then the superwomen aren’t far behind. In a parallel setup, Mukerji’s ‘Mardaani’ and ‘Mardaani 2’ showed tough female cops, humanising them with a personal story while they pack a punch on-screen.
Richa Chadha in ‘Candy’
The new Voot show has everyone raving about its storyline but the one character that shines is Chadha’s act as the sincere cop who has a dark past. As DSP Ratna Sankhwar on a punishment posting, she is a no-nonsense officer who Richa plays with aplomb.
