Three rare rock paintings believed to date back to Late Mesolithic period found on Nagasanipalle Hills in Medak district
Hyderabad: In a major artistic find, three rare rock paintings, estimated to date back to several thousand years back, have been discovered in Pappannapetamandal of Medak district.
A member of the KothaTelanganaCharitra Brundam, Burra Santosh, has discovered these three rare rock paintings at two places on the Nagasanipalle hills on the EdupayalaDurgamma route in Papannapetamandal of Medak district.
KothaTelanganaCharitraBrundam convenor, Sriramoju Haragropal, described these finds located at 18.007378 degrees longitude and 78.182086 degrees latitude, as incredible and rare rock paintings.
The red ochre-coloured rock paintings include a large, colourful figure, a fish, spotted animals, a large sun, bone, two kangaroo-like animals, a large human figure wearing a mask, diamond-shaped designs, zigzag lines, vertical designs and a large tail.
A large carnivorous animal with a large neck and box-like body resembling a dinosaur is also painted here. SriramojuHaragopal said there were also some unidentified images and added, “Almost all the rock paintings appear as outline sketches. Some of the images overlap.”
BandiMuralidhar Reddy, a rock painting expert and advisor to the KothaTelanganaCharitra Brundam, studied the style of these rock paintings, use of colours, abstract images, and the method of painting in red. “These rock paintings can be identified as the Late Mesolithic period,” he added.
