Hyderabad: Access to the iconic football ground at Trimulgherry in Secunderabad Cantonment has been shut, with the construction of a compound wall across the sprawling 2 acres premises progressing at a brisk pace.

HMDA is building the compound wall as part of road widening for the proposed SCB elevated corridor from Gymkhana Grounds to Shamirpet ORR limits.

The ongoing civil works have restricted football players and morning walkers who have been practicing daily for the past five decades. The ground is described by regular users as the only football ground in the Secunderabad Cantonment surviving with lung space.

For the past one month, the agency concerned has restricted local veteran football players and youngsters from entering the football ground, citing the compound wall construction works as the reason, a few daily football practitioners told Telangana Today.

A senior football player and resident of Trimulgherry, S Mohan, said around 200 children used to visit the Trimulgherry football ground during every summer vacation to practice football, but due to the ongoing works there is no chance.

He said the only option is Gymkhana Grounds, and that there are plans to meet the Gymkhana Grounds authorities concerned to allow the children to have daily practice.

Meanwhile, land acquisition for the Elevated Corridor on the opposite side of the football ground is also in progress.
