While it’s a known fact that the internet is an ocean and new navigators entering the ocean might just get lost in the depth of it. Understanding this and in order to promote a safer and more responsible use of online technology and mobile phones, several social media platforms celebrate #SaferInternetDay on February 8, every year.
Well, this year, the theme for the festival being ‘Together for a better Internet’, Twitter is committed for audiences to stay safe and secure on the service while fostering public conversations.
For the same, the service has launched an emoji displaying two hands holding a globe, which can be activated by Tweeting with hashtags #SaferInternetDay, #SID2022, #सुरक्षितइंटरनेटदिवस, among others. The emoji will be available till 13 February.
The online engaging platform has also been hosting conversations and sessions from prominent organisations – like UNICEF India, Breakthrough India, Cyber Peace Foundation, CSR India, Data Security Council of India and so one – focussing on understanding safe internet practices for children and women alike.
The leading social media platform has also released a few security features that can help one feel safer while participating in the conversation on the service:
· Activate two-factor authentication (2FA): You can add an extra layer of security to your Twitter account by activating two-factor authentication. When you enable the feature, you will be required to provide an additional security code or key, along with your password, when logging in, to ensure that only you can access your account.
· Location sharing: Twitter lets you decide whether you want to include your location on individual Tweets and your profile. As a safety practice, you must avoid sharing information that could identify your home or office address, or where your children go to school.
· Protected your tweets: Twitter is all for uninhibited expression, but some of us like to share our thoughts with only a limited set of people. When you sign-up for Twitter, you can choose to protect your Tweets so that only your followers can view and engage with them.
· Turn off photo tagging: To minimise sharing your name to the public, you can disable a feature that allows anyone to tag you in a photo or limit tagging by only those you follow.
· Restrict your DMs: Direct Messages allow you to have a private conversation or create a group conversation, but sometimes people receive unwanted DMs. DM settings allow you to filter out unwanted messages and limit messages from people you don’t follow. If the setting is turned off, you will only receive messages from people you follow.
So this #SaferInternetDay, let’s create more awareness about the nuances of the Internet among the younger users.
