Mahabubabad: In a cruel incident, some unidentified persons killed about 70 monkeys including infants by allegedly feeding them poison. The carcasses of the monkeys, some of them in decomposed state, were found in the bushes near an electric substation on the outskirts of the Shanigapuram village near here on Tuesday night.

On getting to know about the horrendous incident, Mohammed Saleema aka Suma, a social activist and member of ‘Nenusaitam,’ a voluntary organisation, reached the spot and informed the media.

Saddened deeply by the cruel act, Suma staged a protest holding a placard demanding that the officials take steps to identify the culprits and ensure suitable punishment for them for this barbaric act. “If the officials don’t do anything, I will also sit on a fast,” she announced.

Meanwhile, forest officials cremated the monkeys on Wednesday. When contacted, District Forest Officer (DFO), Mahabubabad, T Ravi Kiran said they were trying to trace the culprits. “We are on the lookout for them with the help of police and official machinery. It is not clear why they turned barbaric against a group of helpless monkeys, and that too in such a large scale,” he said.

“We will find the miscreants and ensure punishment for killing the monkeys,” he added. There is also another speculation doing the rounds that farmers may have electrocuted the monkeys to death since they were damaging crops.
