Hyderabad: The Government Order (GO Ms No 229) released by the State government on December 22, 2025, has managed to galvanize different sections of government doctors into one single platform and launch a combined opposition to it.
Here is a lowdown on what actually is the GO (Government Order) all about and why all the government doctors from various associations have combined and are opposing and demanding immediate withdrawal.
What does the GO say?
The GO essentially proposes the nomination of four additional ex-officio members in the Telangana Medical Council (TGMC), in addition to the existing four ex-officio members who are already present in the Council.
Why do doctors believe that the GO is of serious concern?
Undermines TGMC autonomy: TGMC is a statutory and autonomous body, intended to function under the leadership of elected medical professionals. The GO interferes with this autonomy by permitting excessive executive control.
Reduces Doctors to a minority: By increasing the Council’s strength from 25 to 29 members, the GO dilutes the representation of elected doctors, effectively weakening the democratic voice of the medical fraternity within its own regulatory body.
Executive Outreach into Medical regulation: The unilateral GO amounts to ‘de facto’ executive takeover of a statutory medical council, in clear violation of the letter and spirit of the Telangana Medical Practitioners Registration Act.
Permits non-medical and bureaucratic influence: The GO facilitates the entry of non-medical persons and senior bureaucrats, including IAS officers, into the TGMC through ex-official positions.
