Visakhapatnam: State BJP president Somu Veerraju has alleged that the Andhra Pradesh government was encouraging religious conversions.
Addressing a media conference here on Sunday, he wondered why the Chief Minister Y S Jaganmohan Reddy or the Director General of Police Gautam Sawang did not condemn the statement of pastor Praveen Chakravarthi who openly declared that he was an iconoclast and broke the idols of Hindu temples publicly.
“What is the intention behind paying salaries for pastors? It appears as though it is done to promote conversions. I demand the government to release a white paper on this. It is a pity the government is arresting Hindus for attacks on Hindu temples. While it has failed to control the increasing attacks on temples, it has filed a case on the BJP in connection with an attack on a Saraswathi temple in the past.
It also filed a case on BJP leaders for a social media post of an idol damaged during Titli cyclone,” he stated.
Survey of church properties
The BJP leader demanded the government and the Christian institutions in the State to conduct a survey and disclose the total number of churches and their properties in the State. The BJP also, on its part, would conduct a State-wide survey and send its report to the Home Ministry and the Centre.
Noting that there were many Christians, including some ministers, with Hindu names in the State, Veerraju felt that the attacks on HIndu temples in the state were nothing but attacking the Hindu community.
On the proposed reservations for Dalit Christians, he said the term Dalit Christian was against the spirit of the Constitution.
