Hyderabad: Within a span of just ten days, two major road tragedies with 40 deaths have shaken the Telugu states – the Chevella bus and truck collision near Hyderabad and the Kurnool bus fire accident.
On October 24, a private travel bus bound for Bengaluru from Hyderabad burst into flames in Kurnool district after colliding with a motorcycle, killing 19 people including the biker.
Again on Monday, 19 passengers and two drivers lost their lives when an overcrowded RTC bus from Tandur to Hyderabad was crushed under a gravel-laden truck near Mirzaguda in Chevella in Ranga Reddy district. The impact left several others grievously injured and trapped under the debris.
Both accidents occurred during early morning hours and involved heavy vehicles which were allegedly operating beyond safety limits, once again exposing lapses in road safety enforcement and vehicle regulation.
Authorities in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have ordered separate inquiries and intensified checks on overloaded and poorly maintained buses and trucks.
