Karimnagar: On the occasion of the 37th National Road Safety Month, a bike rally was organised in Karimnagar town on Saturday to create awareness about road safety.
As part of the ‘Arrive Alive’ awareness programme, Karimnagar Commissionerate police took out the rally. Collector Pamela Satpathy and Commissioner of Police Gaush Alam participated in the rally and travelled together on a motorcycle, drawing attention from the public.
The rally commenced at the police parade grounds and concluded at the same venue after passing through different localities in the town.
Flagging off the rally, the Collector said the prestigious Arrive Alive programme of the Director General of Police was being implemented successfully in the district. She noted that India had the highest number of two-wheelers in the world, with about 22.10 crore motorcycles, and opined that many lives could be saved if road accident victims did not suffer head injuries.
She advised motorists to adopt self-protection measures and also educate others on road safety practices.
Sharing statistics on road accidents reported last year, the Commissioner of Police said that out of 200 deaths, 80 were two-wheeler riders. Of them, 90 per cent died due to the absence of helmets. He added that nearly 90 per cent of accidents could be prevented if road safety norms were strictly followed.
