Hyderabad: “In the bazaars of Hyderabad, you’ll find the streets bustling with people dressed in their finery, bangles glistening and gleaming on their hands, with bindis and burkas walking alike and the scent of perfume lingering in the air, even long after they are gone…” Well, that is something that a Hyderabadi can relate to in an instant and that is exactly what these Hyderabadi team of filmmakers have brought forward – a true essence of the city – through their upcoming six-episode-series called ‘Qubool Hai?’.
With an underlying subject of child marriage and the atrocities faced by the young girl, the team of filmmakers headed by the director Pranav Pingle Reddy from Mirage Media have brought the authentic flavours of Hyderabad’s old city and the Ganga-Jamuna tehzeeb among the city dwellers.
“Until today, when we talk about Hyderabad, our thoughts have always lingered around Charminar. But, there is a lot more to the city. Hyderabad is a culture on its own. Thus, we have shot in some ironic Hyderabadi places like the lanes of the old city, Golconda Fort, Talab Katta, Naya Pul, Purana Pul, and the oldest Haveli’s of the city. We also shot for over 26 hours on the Musi bridge. In the series, we have not used any kinds of VFX and have shot it all in live locations and not film sets. The language used in the film is also a mix of Telugu and Dakkhani to bring authenticity to the dialogues and the storyline,” shares Pranav Reddy, adding that most of the cast in the series are from theatre groups in the city.
Beyond an attempt to bring the true Hyderabad on screen, the filmmaker and his team found it difficult to shoot in the pandemic times. Sharing that it took quite long for public in Old City to understand about Covid-19 and the safety measures to be taken, Pranav recalls, “’Yeh Corona sab kuch nahi hai Miyan, sirf bukhaar aara kathey’, ‘Waise bhi marne ka ich hai, toh mask kaiku pehenna’, were some of the dialogues we were told when we were shooting wearing masks, social distancing and sanitising everything possible.” The 31-year-old filmmaker gives due credit to his complete team members who have been determined to complete the project in decided deadlines despite the ups and downs.
The six-episode-series called ‘Qubool Hai?’, set to stream on aha from March 11, revolves around a missing girl and the struggles of the girl’s father to stop any crime from happening to his daughter. Through the journey of the father finding his daughter, the series will cover subjects like child marriage – a child bride getting married to an elderly man, child trafficking and all the atrocities involved. So are you okay with pushing a young girl through all that misery, Pranav quizzes on a closing note.
