Nalgonda: Ahead of the local body elections, the husband of a BRS Sarpanch candidate Mamidi Nagalakshmi from Ellammagudem village in Tipparthi mandal was allegedly kidnapped and put to torture by a group linked to the ruling Congress party.
The victim, Yadagiri, was abducted on Saturday morning by a group of men allegedly acting on the instructions of Congress sarpanch candidate Utkuru Sandeep Reddy.
Sandeep Reddy is accused in the murder case of former sarpanch Vijay Reddy’s husband. He is allegedly threatening rivals to secure the sarpanch post keeping rivals away from the contest.
Yadagiri informed the police that he was forcibly taken in a vehicle, threatened with knives, and taken around different villages throughout the day to prevent him from returning home. He alleged he was tortured and threatened of dire consequences as well.
He also alleged that he was asked to stop his wife from filing her nomination or face death. He claimed that one of the kidnappers spoke to a person identified as Bolla Venkata Reddy over the phone during the ordeal.
Following intense protests and pressure from senior BRS leaders, the abductors allegedly released Yadagiri late Saturday night.
Former MLAs Nallamothu Bhaskar Rao, Saidi Reddy Bhupal Reddy, and Ravindra Kumar accompanied the victim to Tipparthi police station and filed a formal complaint.
Yadagiri further alleged that even after reaching the police station, he was threatened and coerced by some individuals in front of police to sign a statement downplaying the incident.
BRS leaders have strongly condemned the incident, terming it a “brazen attack on democracy” by the ruling Congress party to intimidate opposition candidates and forcibly secure the sarpanch posts uncontested.
