Hyderabad: Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice NV Ramana on Saturday emphasised the need for adopting Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) methods which can provide great support to the Indian judicial system by preventing matters from going to the Courts. He said the ADR methods were beneficial to the litigants for resolving disputes in a cost effective and efficient manner.
Speaking at the inaugural of the International Arbitration and Mediation Centre (IAMC) at Phoenix VK Towers here, Justice Ramana said arbitration and mediation have a long history in India and recently, they have acquired prominence across the world as ADR methods. “I have been vocal about my support for such methods. They are beneficial to the litigants due to various reasons – low cost, speed, autonomy of the parties and comfortable environment among others,” he said.
Justice Ramana said the arbitration centre will not confine itself to settling commercial disputes alone, but will look into the disputes of the ordinary citizens. He strongly recommended ADR methods as they provide great support to the judicial system, by either preventing matters from going to Courts, or by moving litigations out of Courts. He urged judges of the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana High Courts as well as other States, to consider the IAMC at Hyderabad for any arbitration and mediation, rather than sending the litigants to faraway locations.
The establishment of IAMC in Hyderabad was an important step towards enhancing the ADR landscape of the country. “Hyderabad has world class facilities. I am sure that the centre will lead the way for arbitration and mediation in the country and will become the primary centre not only in India but across Asia and the world,” he said. He added that creation of the IAMC was a tribute to visionary leaders like former Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao who saw ADR as the way forward. He thanked Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao for extending his full support from the very start, for establishment of the Centre.
Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao who launched the IAMC website, said Hyderabad was progressing with international standards, and was becoming a hub in many sectors. He was extremely happy that the city was chosen for establishment of IAMC for the first time in the country and thanked Justice Ramana for his vital role in this regard. “Arbitration has become a popular method for dispute resolution internationally. I hope that IAMC would bring good name to the country and the State as well as the judiciary system,” he said.
The State government is mooting to bring new laws and promote ADR methods for speedy justice to the needy. While the IAMC aims to address disputes between companies and investors, the Chief Minister strongly felt that the States can take measures to settle inter-State disputes through arbitration. Later, he handed over the centre to CJI Ramana on the occasion. Justice Ramana and Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao along with other dignitaries inspected the arrangements and infrastructure of IAMC.
Supreme Court judges Justice Hima Kohli, Justice Lavu Nageshwar Rao, retired Supreme Court judge Justice RV Raveendran, Telangana High Court Chief Justice Satish Chandra Sharma, Ministers KT Rama Rao, A Indrakaran Reddy, Mohd Mahmood Ali and V Srinivas Goud were among the dignitaries.
