Jangaon: The Prisons and Correctional Services department of Telangana State is committed to rehabilitating the released prisoners by providing employment opportunities in petrol pumps and other establishments run by the department, said Director General of Prisons and Correctional Services, Rajiv Trivedi. He added that the department had made an annual turnover of Rs 600 crore through the sale of different products made by its inmates and also from the petrol stations run by it.
Speaking after inaugurating a petrol pump ‘My Nation filling station’ set up by the department along the national highway here on Monday, Trivedi said that a total of 25 petrol stations were set up by the Prisons department in the State so far. “We are making a turnover of Rs 550 crore through the petrol stations alone, while the remaining Rs 50 crore are earned by selling other products. Setting up the petrol stations and manufacturing units will help in providing employment to the prisoners who completed their sentences. Since it is very difficult for the released prisoners to get employment, we have taken the responsibility to offer jobs to them. Otherwise, there is a chance that they would continue with their criminal activities,” he said.
Referring to Covid-19 infections in jails of other States, the DG said that there was no impact of Covid-19 in the Telangana jails. District Collector K Nikhila, IG Prisons B Saidaiah, DIG Prisons YS Rajesh, and other officials were present at the programme.
