Hyderabad: In a tragic incident, an elderly man died of suspected asphyxiation when a fire broke out in his residence at Vayupuri Colony in Neredmet on Sunday night.
A short circuit triggered by an electric appliance is suspected to have led to the fire.
The victim, Jayaprakash Ramanna (79), was living alone on the ground floor of a two-storey villa. While his sister stays with her family on the first floor, his son works in Bengaluru and daughter lives in Kukatpally.
Police said the fire erupted around 9 pm and thick smoke quickly filled the entire villa, leaving Ramanna unconscious. He was rescued by police and immediately shifted to a nearby private hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors.
The Fire Department personnel doused the flames in a four-hour-long fight.
Investigators suspect short circuit as the refrigerator and switchboards in the house were severely damaged.
