Hyderabad: On highways, getting aid for emergencies might be difficult. For road users seeking urgent assistance, National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has placed ‘Save Our Soul’ (SOS) boxes throughout Outer Ring Road (ORR) and national highways for every 200-300 meters. These boxes have contact with the nearest police station and control room in case of emergency. It is a GPS-enabled technology with voice communication that connects to the local authorities for immediate assistance.

These orange-colored emergency calling boxes are used at Highways, ORR, and toll plazas during emergency incidents. Each SOS box is numbered. When the user presses the emergency call button on the SOS System, the camera installed on the SOS pole will automatically activate, and the device will be connected to the nearest control room. Ambulance and patrolling vehicles are alerted too and the authorized persons will receive an alert message with the box number.

The point worth mentioning is that this device does not require any internet signal. It is helpful for commuters during emergencies such as danger, panic, or distress conditions, as they could speak to the control rooms directly and they don’t have to worry about not carrying mobiles or low batteries in their mobile phones.

Due to lack of awareness, these SOS boxes are not being used much, albeit, NHAI is reviewing other important places to install these devices to render help to the public and make the city safe.
