Hyderabad: A packet of ‘boondi’ will be the last place someone would look for smuggled goods. But security personnel at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport were not diverted by the popular snack packets and two persons trying to smuggle foreign currency worth Rs.54 lakh hidden inside ‘boondi’ packets are now facing legal proceedings.
Customs officials at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport in Shamshabad caught the two passengers who were bound to Dubai, allegedly attempting to smuggle foreign currency on Tuesday morning.
Officials said the passengers, who were caught separately, concealed the currency in sachets of ‘boondi’ in their baggage. They were scheduled to board an Emirates flight. However, at the security check of the international departure wing, officials scanned their baggage and noticed something suspicious. Upon physically checking, they found foreign currencies including Saudi Riyals, US and Australian dollars, Kuwaiti Dinars, United Arab Emirates Dirhams, Omani Riyals and Bahraini Dinars concealed inside the sachets.
Officials said when the passengers at questioning failed to submit valid documents for the currencies in their possession, the currency was seized and the two were booked under sections of the Customs Act. Officials are investigating if the passengers were linked to any forex racketeers in the city or abroad.
