Hyderabad: Excited and beaming with joy, women lined up at designated centres in the city on Saturday, with the distribution of Bathukamma sarees beginning in the city.
With the Bathukamma festival fast approaching, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on behalf of the State government started distribution of sarees to women beneficiaries. This year, over 8.9 lakh Bathukamma sarees are being distributed at 838 distribution centres ahead of the festivities that will commence on October 6.
The GHMC officials distributed the sarees in the presence of Ministers, MPs, MLAs and other public representatives. Animal Husbandry Minister T Srinivas Yadav, Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi, Khairatabad MLA Danam Nagender and Malkajgiri MLA Mynampally Hanumantha Rao were among the elected representatives who participated in the distribution process in different parts of the city.
“Bathukamma festival depicts the culture of Telangana and Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao wants women to celebrate the festival on a grand scale,” said Srinivas Yadav.
In her address, the Mayor said, “One saree each will be given to all eligible beneficiaries and this practice of presenting sarees to women ahead of the festival is nowhere else in the country.”
Currently, the sarees are stocked in 17 godowns in different parts of the city and staffers have also been appointed for each warehouse. Women aged above 18 years having Food Security Cards (white ration card) were provided with these sarees. The beneficiaries showed the Food Security Card Number slip and the Aadhaar card as ID proof at the collection centres. At some centres, beneficiaries also collected the sarees by showing the Elector’s Photo Identity Card (EPIC).
Meanwhile, GHMC staffers also decided to hand over sarees to women above 60 years at their doorstep by taking acknowledgement, besides handing them over at distribution centres.
Furthermore, a random sample inspection to check the quality of fabric before distribution was done by Telangana State Handloom Weavers Cooperative. To ensure the distribution process was held without hurdles, committees consisting of bill collectors, women organisations and dealers of the fair price shops were constituted. Training and orientation programmes were also held for committee members.
