Hyderabad: LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) has been recognised as a leading global center for corneal neurotization, a specialised microsurgery that offers new hope for patients suffering from neurotrophic keratitis, a medical condition traditionally managed only with palliative support.
The LVPEI, between 2019 and 2025, has performed over 40 of these procedures, achieving success rates that are comparable to those of the world’s most established centers, a press release said.
Corneal neurotization is a technique that restores sensation to a cornea that has lost its nerve supply due to trauma, congenital issues, or nerve damage. The procedure involves rerouting healthy sensory nerves from a donor site, such as the forehead or leg, and carefully attaching them to the cornea. Over several months, these transplanted nerves regenerate, restoring crucial protective reflexes like blinking and tearing that are essential for long-term vision protection.
LVPEI doctors attributed their success to their unique, multidisciplinary approach, which brings together corneal specialists, neurosurgeons, and other experts.
