Hyderabad: The IT sector in Hyderabad need not have any apprehensions over Covid-19 and can resume work from their offices, Director of Public Health (DPH), Telangana, Dr G Srinivasa Rao said here on Monday.
The Delta variant of SARS-CoV-2 was very much under control in Telangana and there was no imminent threat of a surge of new Covid infections in Hyderabad, he said.
“We urge the managements of companies to start their offices in the IT corridor. We have ensured that over 90 per cent of the support staff and workers from unorganised sector, who provide services to the IT sector in the city, were vaccinated,” he said.
A third Covid wave can happen only if a new and more virulent variant of SARS-CoV-2 emerges and so far there has been no evidence of this happening in the State. The Covid second wave has petered out and it should not hold back the IT sector from starting their physical offices, Dr. Rao said.
IT sector also creates indirect employment and supports livelihood for lakhs of families in Kondapur, Gachibowli and Madhapur. “It’s been almost three months since we eased lockdown restrictions and so far there has been no indication of any major surge of new infections. This should be a good reason for the IT sector to open their campuses,” he said.
Barring a few clusters of Covid infections at isolated locations in the State, the easing of lockdown restrictions has not caused any major surges.
“It has been 10 to 12 days since schools have re-opened in Telangana and there is no indication of a surge or even a cluster of Covid infections. There are no signs of a new and severe variant of SARS-CoV-2. Out of over one lakh persons tested for Covid in schools, only 55 children have tested positive for Covid so far,” Dr Rao pointed out.
The DPH pointed out that following Covid appropriate behaviour that includes masks, physical distancing and application of hand sanitizers was enough to stave-off fresh surge of Covid infections.
“There is a gradual improvement of attendance in both government and private schools across Telangana. I assure the parents also that the State government has taken enough measures including vaccinations to contain Covid-19 in Telangana,” he added.
