Hyderabad: Demanding regularisation of their services, scores of part-time teachers of 12 State universities attempted to lay a siege to the State Secretariat here on Thursday.
On the call of Telangana All Universities Part-time Teachers Association, the teachers boycotted the classes and marched towards the Secretariat. Several teachers who commenced their journey from hometowns to Hyderabad were detained by the police at various places.
However, some teachers managed to reach the Secretariat. A tense atmosphere prevailed as the police stopped teachers and detained them before shifting them to different police stations in the city.
The protesters, who have been teaching for the last 10 to 15 years, demanded the government either regularise their services or provide them job security. If not they wanted an amendment to GO 21, giving weightage to the universities part-time teachers in the regular recruitment. They also sought top priority in the upcoming recruitment.
“Despite having a full workload per week, the part-time teachers are paid the lowest and have no job security. Despite giving several representations seeking either regularisation of services or job security, our pleas went in vain. We have put forward three demands – regularisation or a job security, weightage and top priority in the fresh recruitment,” said J Nageshwar, working president Telangana All Universities Part-time Teachers Association.
