Hyderabad roads turn hazardous as heavy rains leave potholes, damaged stretches

Continuous rainfall has damaged roads across several Hyderabad localities, leaving potholes, washed-out surfaces, and unfinished civic works that pose risks to commuters. Residents have urged authorities to carry out immediate repairs, warning that deteriorating road conditions could lead to serious accidents.

HYDERABAD: Incessant rain has left several roads in Hyderabad in a dangerous condition, with potholes, eroded road surfaces and unfinished civic works making commuting hazardous, particularly for two-wheeler riders.

Motorists travelling through areas such as Dhoolpet, Mangalhat, Puranapul, Bahadurpura and Misrigunj are struggling to negotiate damaged stretches where the road surface has been washed away by continuous rainfall. Waterlogged potholes and uneven surfaces have increased the risk of accidents, forcing commuters to drive cautiously during peak hours.

“The potholes are submerged under rainwater, and we never know how deep they are. Several riders have lost balance while trying to avoid them,” said Rajveer Singh, a resident of Dhoolpet.

Residents said that civic authorities had recently carried out pipeline-laying works at Ghode Ki Khabar, Joshiwadi, near the Gandhi Statue at Puranapul and Aghapura, but failed to restore the roads after completing the excavation. The stretches remain covered with loose gravel and sharp stones, making them unsafe for motorists and pedestrians alike.

“Loose stones and uneven patches have made commuting extremely difficult. The civic authorities should restore the roads immediately before a serious accident occurs,” demanded Ramesh Kumar, a shopkeeper at Puranapul.

Another major concern is the stretch between Chanchalguda and Santoshnagar, where flyover construction is underway. With a portion of the road occupied for the project, motorists are forced to use a narrow carriageway riddled with potholes. During rains, the potholes get submerged, making them virtually invisible to commuters. Two-wheeler riders, in particular, are vulnerable to skidding after hitting the water-filled craters.

“Traffic moves slowly, and even a minor mistake can lead to an accident. The authorities should either repair the road or provide a safer temporary diversion,” said Suresh, a commuter from Santoshnagar.
