Hyderabad: Orthopaedic surgeons at Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Kondapur, have corrected the posture of a teenager Hemant, who was pursuing second-year intermediate and was suffering from scoliosis, a medical condition in which the spine curves sideways.
The deformity was impacting the youngster’s quality of life, who hailed from Kodavatikallu village, Chandarlapadu mandal, Krishna district. Due to scoliosis, he was depressed, unable to focus on studies and was desperately looking for a solution, surgeons said.
Examination by surgeons under senior orthopaedic and spine surgeon, KIMS, Kondapur, Dr Srikirishna Chaitanya revealed that the youngster had scoliosis with an 85-degree curve.
“These deformities are common in our society and should be identified in school screening camps so that we can prevent progression of the medical condition. Ideally, such children should be operated by 13 years. With the availability of technology like intraoperative neuro-monitoring, major risks can be avoided,” Dr Chaitanya said.
The doctors performed a seven-hour long surgery and corrected the deformity by 80 per cent. While the surgery usually costs Rs. 9 lakh, the amount was arranged through CM Relief Fund and the family had to spend just Rs. 2 lakh. Post-surgery, the youngster has recovered and is able to lead an active life, doctors added.
