Hyderabad: Premier chemical research facility from Hyderabad, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) has entered into a partnership with 2 Degrees Clicon Pvt Ltd to scale up technology that converts non-recyclable plastic waste into high-value industrial fuels.

The collaboration, formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), specifically targets the multi-layered packaging used in FMCG products like snack packets and sachets. Traditionally, such composites are difficult to recycle due to their complex structure, often ending up in landfills or being disposed of through toxic open-air burning.

Leveraging CSIR-IICT’s decades of expertise in thermochemical conversion, the partnership aims to transform such plastic into Alternate Diesel Fuel (ADF) and Petro Polymer Fuel (PPF).

These alternative energy sources are already being utilised in high-temperature furnaces across the cement and steel sectors, effectively reducing industrial dependency on conventional fossil fuels.

As a part of the MoU, the Hyderabad-based 2 Degree Clicon and IICT will work to improve process efficiency and enhance fuel quality, creating a scalable blueprint for plastic waste valorisation (which means transforming waste materials into useful products) in India.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr D Srinivasa Reddy, Director, IICT, said that the research combines the institute’s process innovation with industrial experience to move plastic-to-fuel technology from the laboratory to large-scale deployment.

The IICT Director said that the initiative will create a measurable environmental impact while opening new economic pathways for sustainable fuels.

Sheetal Agarwal, CEO, 2 Degrees Clicon, added that the partnership will strengthen the scientific foundation of the technology, enabling industries to adopt more sustainable energy solutions at scale.
