Hyderabad: With the State Health department stating that the Omicron-driven third wave of coronavirus pandemic has reached its fag end, many IT companies are now relooking at their work from home strategies even as they plan to start full-fledged offices in the next few weeks.
The Information Technology companies in Hyderabad that had intended to start calling employees back to offices from January had reversed the order considering the rise in cases at the start of the year. However, now with the Covid cases reducing and the positivity rate also falling in the State along with the government’s assurance, many are reconsidering their earlier decision and may look at starting offices in the next couple of weeks.
While larger IT companies could be in a wait-and-watch mode, smaller companies that have already suffered in the last two years may look at opening up offices with 100 per cent capacity.
“Once the situation starts to stabilise in the next one to two weeks, then many companies might consider starting offices completely. Unlike the second wave, the third wave was not severe medically but still a lot of employees got infected. This variant has become endemic so with proper safety measures in place, companies can look at opening up offices and also restart travel for the employees. Through this, not just employees but also tertiary units like the security guards, housekeeping staff, cab drivers and restaurant and food truck owners will also benefit as they have been severely impacted,” says Ravi Korukonda, a technology entrepreneur.
Employees’ consent matters: Hysea
Providing reality check to the IT companies and employees, Hyderabad Software Employees Association (Hysea) president Bharani K Aroll informed that infection can happen anywhere and the IT companies with all their safety measures are a much safer place for the employees.
“We are encouraging our member companies to start calling back employees to the office. However, there is a lot of apprehensions among employees due to the uncertainty of the situation. At the end of the day, employees’ consent is what matters for many companies and in the IT sector, majority of the companies are not mandating employees to come to office and it is purely voluntary,” he said.
