JAY-Z has tapped artiste Derrick Adams to design an NFT to celebrate the 25th anniversary of his 1996 debut album ‘Reasonable Doubt’ that reimagines the iconic cover of a man tipping his hat and holding a cigar.
The rapper first warned fans to move when they changed their Twitter profile picture to the Cryptopunks icon.
CryptoPunks is a collection of 10,000 NFTs on the Ethereum blockchain released in 2017 by software company Larva Labs. Each punk features a pixelated face of a human, ape, alien, or zombie.
Listed for auction at Sotheby’s, the NFT is called ‘Heir to the Throne’, which was the original title of the album, shows a redesign of the cover image alongside Adams’s own addition of the rapper’s full profile. The punk is a male, characterised by gold chains and large hair, both of which seem to emulate the characteristics of JAY.
This particular CryptoPunk was purchased on April 25 for 55 ETH and was worth $126,000 at the time.
The NFT sale will take place just days after the launch of JAY-Z’s ‘Reasonable Doubt’ related proceedings. The first is aimed at the album cover photographer Jonathan Manion allegedly abusing popular images. The second was raised against Roc-A-Fella co-founder DameDash for trying to sell the iconic album NFT.
