Khammam: Selling houses and house plots through lucky draw has become the latest trend in Telangana as individuals raffle their property amid the slump in real estate sales across the State.
It might be noted that such incidents were reported at Huzurnagar in Suryapet district, Choutuppal in Yadadri-Bhongir district, in Nalgonda town, Narsampet in Warangal district and other places with land owners hitting jackpots through lottery ticket sales.
An individual Shankar of Shankarpally in Sangareddy district even won a 66-yard plot, which was put up for sale through a lucky draw in Choutuppal by its owner Kancharla Ramabrahmam, after buying a ticket on his daughter Hansika’s name. The news caught everyone’s attention.
But the plan of an individual in Khammam who followed the trend suffered a setback as he was arrested by the police along with his 13 associates who were accused of cheating the public by selling tickets for an unauthorised lottery scheme to sell a house plot.
The one-town Inspector of Police Karunakar informed that a resident of Stambhani Nagar in Khammam city, Alasyam Vinay Kumar was taken into custody for questioning as he was selling tickets for a ‘2026-Sankranti mega lucky draw’.
He printed 50 books each with 100 lottery-tickets, without any official permission and planned to earn Rs 25 lakh by selling 5000 tickets to the public. Each ticket cost Rs 500. He offered a 563-square-yards open plot to the winner of the lucky draw.
The Inspector said that the accused bought the plot at Nerada village in Chintakani mandal of the district from Chinthala Anusha of the village for Rs 7 lakh and got it registered under his mother Nagamani’s name.
Even though the land was not worth much, he had planned to make people believe that the value of the land was high. As per the plan, he took a loan from IKF Home Loan Finance Limited and registered the land by showing that he had bought it for Rs 20 lakh.
Then the accused appointed 13 people to promote and sell the tickets. Vinay Kumar confessed to the police that he had sold tickets to as many as 533 persons so far and had earned Rs 2, 66,500. 27 lucky draw books, 533 receipts and a cell phone were seized from him.
His accomplices, M Veerabhadram, Shaik Nazir Pasha, T Sandeep, P Sai Teja, Oruganti Ramu, Indla Raja, K Koteswara Rao, Bathula Veerababu, Saida Chary, T Deva, M Sreenu, Pandi Venkanna and Venkatesh were arrested, the Inspector said.
