The railway station is one of 40 stations in Telangana chosen for upgradation to enhance modern passenger amenities. According to a release from SCR, the station is being developed at an estimated cost of Rs 25.41 crore to transform it into a growth hub.

Khammam: Works related to modernisation of Khammam railway station under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS) have been going on at brisk pace.
The railway station is among the 40 railway stations selected in Telangana for upgradation to provide modern passenger amenities to passengers. The railway station is being developed with an estimated cost of Rs 25.41 crore to convert it into a growth centre, said a release from SCR.
The railway station is located strategically on Delhi-Chennai and Hyderabad-Vijayawada railway lines and plays a crucial role for trains traveling between North and South India. It has a rich history dating back to the 19th century as part of the Nizam’s Guaranteed State Railway (NGSR) project, which connected Hyderabad to Vijayawada. During the British era, the station played a crucial role in the transportation of coal, limestone and other minerals from the nearby mines.
Khammam railway station falls under Kazipet-Vijayawada section with average footfall of 12,988 passengers per day and annual income of Rs 29.64 crore. About 83 trains halt at Khammam station. In view of the stations’ importance it has been selected for upgradation.
Amenities such as air-conditioned waiting rooms, escalators, construction of 12m wide foot over bridge (FoB) along with two lifts and two escalators for convenience of passengers are being developed.
Overall, about 45 percent of the work has been completed so far. 12M wide gangway fabrication, erection and sheeting, general waiting hall work, temporary booking office work and other works have been completed, the release said.
