Hyderabad: Fashion is something that brings out a new trend and introduces it to people with elan. Have you ever opened the wardrobes of your mom or grandmother to see the entire collection of their saris stocked up in neat piles, which have been put aside and not used in a long while? If yes, let us understand this new trend of recycling, which seems to provide exciting options for youngsters to experiment with.
The current lull in sales has forced many designers to get creative, with them now starting in-house projects of revamping old saris in customer’s wardrobes. “We welcome clients to get their old collection and turn them into a new outfit which gives it an indo-western look. These are trendy and give classy look too,” says Keethana Sunil, who is running Rekha’s Couture.
Another designer, Architha Narayanam, says, “We work on saris that our customers can repurpose into a salwar, lehenga, dupatta for girls or kurtas for men. Silk saris stay in perfect shape if they are worn regularly. And when it comes to these expensive silk saris, we usually use them for one or two occasions. So, we thought why not repurpose them by giving it a new look! We talk to the client and try to understand how exactly they want it and we give our best,” says the Hyderabad designer.
We usually see saris being turned into lehengas or salwars, which is good. But now, youngsters are trying different styles like converting them into drape dresses – one-piece gown with pleats, giving it the illusion of a sari. These are quite in trend now and followed diligently by fashion lovers.
There are so many ways of revamping a sari, believe our local designers. You can take the border off and put a new one, making it a completely different sari and design it according to your choice. People started playing with the old and new collections and making the best use of them.
“I so wanted to use my mom’s amazing collection of saris, but I don’t feel comfortable wearing them like a sari. So, I have asked my designer to change it into a gown which would look trendy and traditional too,” says Sunaina, a client.
