Warangal: To provide an opportunity to the young talent in technical and other fields of research, the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Warangal, has increased the intake of PhD scholars from 150 to 250 from the current academic year.
According to Director, NITW, Prof NV Ramana Rao, the institute will offer PhD programmes in both full-time (FT) and part-time (PT) modes in 13 departments. They are Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electronics and Communication Engineering, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Biotechnology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Humanities & Social Sciences and School of Management.
The candidates selected for admission into Ph.D under full-time programme are eligible to receive Institute fellowship as per Ministry of Education rules. However, the institute fellowships are subject to change from time to time, under instructions from the union Ministry of Education. Category-wise (EWS, OBC, SC, ST, PWD) reservations on overall available seats are followed as per union government guidelines. Further, the Institute has also introduced new integrated courses in sciences.
It will offer three new M.Sc. Programmes – Integrated M.Sc in Mathematics, Integrated M.Sc in Physics, and Integrated M.Sc in Chemistry from this academic year (2021-22) as per the new National Educational Policy (NEP)-2020. These are five-year programmes, and after five years, M.Sc degree will be awarded in the concerned branch. However, students have an option to exit after three years with B.Sc Degree based on the request subject to passing all the courses in first three years and meeting the eligibility requirements.
“The students also have an option to exit with a B.Sc.(Honors) at the end of the fourth year based on the student’s request subject to passing all the courses in the first four years and meeting the eligibility requirements. These programmes are unique in that they include engineering science core subjects, mandatory non-credit courses, Humanities and Social Science courses, and term projects in the 6th semester in addition to professional core courses and professional elective,” said Prof Ramana Rao.
Meanwhile, the faculty members and scholars of the NITW are performing well in research and achieved significant improvement in the recent years. As per the Scopus database, the number of publications in the calendar year 2021 crossed the 1,000 mark.
“In 2017, the total number of publications was 540. However, In last four years, the output has almost doubled with the induction of new faculty. In the last two recruitment drives held in 2018 and 2019, nearly 150 new faculty members were recruited. All the faculty were given initial research funding of Rs three lakh each to establish their basic research facility. Also, funding was given generously to all the departments to purchase and upgrade the research equipment,” Prof Ramana Rao said.
“In addition to completing the academic syllabus and laboratory classes online, the Institute has supported and motivated the faculty and students to enhance their research efforts. The Institute has also established new Centres of Excellence (CoE) and a Centralized Research Instrumentation Facility to support multidisciplinary research not only among different departments, but also in collaboration with the industry. The Institute is also spending huge resources on e-journals, e-books, which can be accessed from any place,” Prof Rao informed.
