Hyderabad: The declining strength of government and local body schools has reached a new low in Telangana. While the State is home to 26,141 government and local body schools, only 15 are serving more than 1,000 students, accounting for 0.0573 per cent of the total schools. This reflects popularity of the government-run schools and preference among parents in the State.

According to details available with the Education department, 15 government-run schools, with only one in Hyderabad, are recording more than 1,000 students in strength during the academic year 2025-26.

The PM Shri ZPHS Manikonda topped admissions with 1,372 students, while the PM Shri Government High School (Boys), Chinthalpet, Gadwal, has second-highest admissions of 1,310. At 1,235, PM Shri NATCO ZPHS Indira Nagar has third highest number of students.

Other government-run schools that recorded more than 1,000 admissions are Govt Boys’ High School Nampally (1,226), PM Shri ZPHS Serilingampally (1,157), PM Shri ZPHS Jillelaguda (1,124), Government Girls’ High School Sankulammamettu (1,119), ZPHS Jagadgirinagar (1,106), ZPHS Kukatpally (1,076), Govt Practicing High School Bhimnagar (1,069), ZPHS Hayathnagar (1,046), PM Shri ZPHS Indervelly (1,036), ZPHS Shivarampally (1,026), ZPHS Borgaon (1,002), and ZPHS Badepally (1,001).

A scan of the data reveals startling revelations and a sorry state of affairs in the government-run schools. Not even a single school out of 18,295 government and local body primary schools has 500 or more students on rolls.

At 496 students, the Raj Bhavan Primary School in Hyderabad has the highest enrolment recorded in the State. Other schools with relatively high student strength include Gatlanarsingapur in Hanmakonda (406 students), CPL Amberpet (453), NBT Nagar Banjara Hills (473), Shaikpet Primary School (462), and Mayurnagar (459).

Further, there are 7,876 schools with less than 30 enrolment and another 9,763 institutions with 31 to 100 admissions. As many as 3,773 schools have students between 101 and 250. Only 1,106 schools have 251 to 1,000 students.
