Hyderabad: A painted stork, which was in the city along with other migratory birds is suspected to have become a victim of the dangerous manja used to fly kites.
The bird was found with a deep cut on one of its wings by local people at Mallikarjunanagar in the Amberpet police station limits on Tuesday evening.
On being alerted, the police went to the place and took the bird into their custody and informed Forest department officials. A local NGO, Animal Warrior’s Conservation Society was in turn alerted by Forest officials.
“Our volunteers went to the police station and picked up the bird. It was shifted to the Nehru Zoological Park for treatment. We suspect that it sustained a deep cut after coming in contact with manja,” said Mahesh Goud, rescue coordinator.
Zoo officials said there was huge loss of blood as the bird had sustained a deep cut. The bird died within minutes of being brought to the Zoo Park for treatment, officials said. Painted storks, usually found in the Himalayas and Southeast Asia, are spotted in the water bodies in the city along with other migratory birds.
