Hyderabad: The Railway Protection Force (RPF), Secunderabad team has arrested 82 individuals so far in 2025 for incidents of stone pelting on trains, a criminal offence that threatens passenger safety and damages national property.
The arrests were made under ‘Operation Samraksha’, an initiative to curb attacks on railway property and passengers.
Railway officials said stone pelting causes financial losses, damages coaches and windows, and disrupts train services, leading to delays that inconvenience thousands of commuters.
“Further, it is a criminal offence with severe consequences. Those found guilty can face legal action and may even lose eligibility for government jobs,” RPF officials said.
To tackle the issue, the RPF has implemented several key strategies.
The division has intensified surveillance along vulnerable sections of railway tracks using advanced CCTV cameras and inputs from the RPF Cyber Cell.
“The RPF has also strengthened its intelligence-gathering and is working with local law enforcement and community members. Inspectors have formed local WhatsApp groups with community leaders to regularly share information on the legal repercussions of stone pelting,” officials added.
Specialised patrolling teams have also been deployed to maintain a visible presence in high-risk areas, deterring potential offenders.
The RPF urged citizens to report any information related to stone pelting to the Railway Helpline – 139 for swift action.
