SUT, IIT-H launch new format of Joint Doctoral Programme
The students admitted to the JDP will have an opportunity to spend up to one year at SUT, Australia supported by Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Awards (SUPRAS) scholarship from SUT.

Sangareddy: Swinburne University of Technology and Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) have launched a joint doctoral programme (JDP) in a new format. The JDP is expected to commence in July 2021 with an enrollment of 10 PhD students.
Swinburne University of Technology (SUT) and (IITH) are engaged in the JDP from 2017, and had enrolled 48 students since 2017, with one student graduating and 2 others completing this year. From this year, IIT-H and SUT have devised a new JDP, for bright and motivated students to work on frontier areas of science, technology and design, by which the students become JDP students from the day of their registering for PhD. The students admitted to the JDP will have an opportunity to spend up to one year at SUT, Australia supported by Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Awards (SUPRAS) scholarship from SUT. This association is aimed at developing successful academic and research collaborations in the areas of common interest and complementary capabilities. It seeks to harness the synergy at both institutions to propel excellent research.
The students admitted to the JDP will receive a fellowship as per the Ministry of Education norms while at IIT-H. Besides, students will receive a top-up scholarship (150 AUD) from SUT while they are at IIT-H. During their research time at SUT, they will receive a scholarship identical to the Swinburne University Postgraduate Research Awards (SUPRA) from SUT for up to 12 months.
Sharing her opinion on the new JDP, Prof Pascale Quester, Vice-Chancellor and President, SUT said Swinburne has excelled in innovation in learning, research and the way they approach the business during the past 100 years. “At Swinburne, we aim to be a leading university in science, technology, and innovation, with a real impact that transforms industries, lives and communities. It was a wonderful experience working with IIT-H in the past and I am confident this partnership will produce the innovations and technology of global standard”, the Vice-chancellor said.
Enumerating the merits of the program with SUT, Prof BS Murty, Director, IIT-H said “IIT-H shares a special and successful partnership with SUT. This agreement aims at creating a global ecosystem of academic and research to bring the best of the two pioneer institutes of the world and deliver the new age technology for the betterment of society at large. This will also promote global learning, fosters understanding among groups from diverse backgrounds and perspectives, and develops globally minded individuals”.
The program was launched with a virtual signing of the new agreement by Prof Pascale Questerand Prof BS Murty in the presence of Dr Andrew J Smith (Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Global & Community Engagement (Interim), SUT) and Prof Pinaki Prasad Bhattacharjee (Dean, International and Alumni Relations, IITH) and other officials from both the institutions.
