Cyberabad police busted an interstate racket transporting banned BG-III cotton seeds worth Rs 90 lakh. Two persons were arrested after 3,000 kg of seeds were seized near Medchal. The main supplier is absconding, and the case is under investigation.

Commissioner of Police M Srinivasulu said raids were conducted on the house of Karnakonda Chandrashekhar in Bopparam and five quintals of cotton seed stored illegally was seized.

According to agriculture officials, farmers would need two packets of cotton seeds per acre which would weigh 475 grams each.

As many as 5.41 lakh packets of cotton seeds were available for cultivation in 2.16 lakh acres of land.

Farmers from several parts of the district flocked the seed selling shops from 7 am, following shortage of the seeds belonging to a brand, Rashi-2.

The Collector said that there was no shortage of cotton seeds in the district. As 5.25 lakh packets of cotton seeds were required in the district as many as 5.60 lakh packets were available.

A sum of 400 kilograms of seeds were seized from their possession. The value of the seeds was assessed to be Rs 19.34 lakh.

Task Force Inspector Ch Rana Prathap said that Chapile Vinod from Gangapur village in Chinthalamanepalli mandal was nabbed while smuggling the seeds on his motorbike from Telangana to Maharashtra.

According to sources, the traders and middlemen were buying the weedicide for Rs.500 per litre and selling it to farmers at double that price.
