Cyberabad police busted an interstate racket transporting banned BG-III cotton seeds worth Rs 90 lakh. Two persons were arrested after 3,000 kg of seeds were seized near Medchal. The main supplier is absconding, and the case is under investigation.
Commissioner of Police M Srinivasulu said raids were conducted on the house of Karnakonda Chandrashekhar in Bopparam and five quintals of cotton seed stored illegally was seized.
Farmers from nearby villages formed a serpentine queue at th Agro Sev Centre in Toopran to buy seeds, but they became agitated when they were told that there were no stocks leading to the protests.
The Collector said that there was no shortage of cotton seeds in the district. As 5.25 lakh packets of cotton seeds were required in the district as many as 5.60 lakh packets were available.
Task Force Inspector Ch Rana Prathap said that Chapile Vinod from Gangapur village in Chinthalamanepalli mandal was nabbed while smuggling the seeds on his motorbike from Telangana to Maharashtra.
