In yet another case of food poisoning in government-run schools in the State, about 30 students of the Zilla Parishad High School in Maganoor mandal fell ill after consuming mid-day meals in the school in the afternoon on Wednesday.
A large number of students who gathered near the college gate, brought with them a charred vessel of burnt food that caused food poisoning. They raised slogans demanding justice and better food services in the hostel.
They were immediately admitted to a hospital. Their condition was learnt to be stable. The other students and parents expressed concern over food served at the hostel.
Sources said 15 more students took ill after consuming contaminated dinner at the hostel, on Saturday. Forty-five students fell sick on Thursday and Wednesday.
Students allege that food was being cooked in unhygienic conditions, while drinking water was not protected with water tank getting cleaned monthly once
Attendees on Thursday night exhibited severe symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea shortly after consuming the offering. Health officials acted quickly, admitting the affected individuals to various hospitals in Dedadra, Kothariya, Wadhwan, and the Civil Hospital in Surendranagar.
Collector Koya Sree Harsha instructed the officials to pay special focus on the maintenance of residential schools and social welfare hostels in the district.
There has been a rising number of student protests, including those by girls, against the sub-standard food being served. From Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s constituency of Kodangal to Mahabubabad, there have been seven such protests in just four days since Friday.
The actress has been feeling unwell for the last few days. As per a media report, the actress had cancelled all her appointments for Wednesday in order to rest and recuperate.
